Elephant Safari

Just a short journey from Wilpattu, the Kala Wewa Sanctuary offers one of Sri Lanka's most authentic and intimate elephant-watching experiences. Unlike the crowded scenes of other parks, here you'll encounter majestic wild elephants roaming freely across open plains, feeding on grasses, or bathing peacefully along the ancient tank's edge.

Built by King Dhatusena in the 5th century, Kala Wewa is more than a reservoir — it's a spiritual landscape where history, culture, and wildlife meet. Its surrounding grasslands and forests now serve as a vital refuge for elephants and other wildlife, especially during dry seasons when they gather in great numbers.
